Sand Springs Tornado Destroys Bald Eagle Nests, Chicks

Wednesday's devastating storms that moved through Green Country weren't just a tragedy for people and pets, but had a destructive effect on wildlife as well - including our National Symbol.

Several bald eagle nests were destroyed by the tornado that hit River City Park in Sand Springs.

The eagle parents are circling the park with their piercing calls, looking for their nests and their chicks which were all killed.

The EF-2 tornado destroyed a natural habitat for one of our national treasures and protected animals, the bald eagle.

The area along the river all the way to South Tulsa is a great area for bald eagles with these tall cottonwoods and this river and Keystone Lake providing a great food source. But in these last several days, you can see a lot of bald eagles out in the area screaming and looking for their baby chicks.

We had reports that over four nests were destroyed. That resulted in seven baby chicks losing their lives.

Now some good news to this is that next year these mothers and fathers will be able to re-nest out in this area, according to the Sutton Avian Research Center.
