A Claremore man was injured when the driver of a car he had been riding in rammed into a Madill police car then tried to escape, according to the Oklahoma Highway Patrol.

Authorities say it happened when police stopped a Nissan Maxima for a traffic violation Friday night on Highway 177 outside Madill.

Madill Officer Steven Ray pulled over Matthew Young of Ardmore, who authorities say had been drinking. The 21-year-old Young eventually stopped on the shoulder of the highway.

That's when troopers say Jacob Hawley of Claremore got out of the Nissan and walked to someone's yard.

Troopers say Young then drove backwards, ramming Officer Ray's Ford Explorer. The Ardmore man then drove away, the report states, and a second police officer tried to stop him using a tactical vehicle intervention.

When that didn't work, the 21-year-old Young kept going through a yard and ran over his passenger, troopers say.

Hawley, 22, was taken by medical helicopter to a Plano hospital in critical condition with trunk and leg injuries.

Troopers say Young smelled of alcohol and the cause of the crash was failure to yield to emergency vehicles. No one else was injured.
