A group of Tulsa Union Public School students spent part of their day Tuesday making sure families will be taken care of, should disaster strike.

Sixth and seventh graders packed "comfort kits" for the Red Cross. The kits included toiletries and essentials and are given out to people who lose their homes in a disaster.

Organizers said the effort was a learning experience for the 150 students involved.

"They're also going to be learning about emergency preparedness themselves so they can be readier, a little more prepared for disasters and emergencies they might experience," said Brenda Michael-Haggard with Volunteer Tulsa.

GDH Consulting in Tulsa helped collect the items used in the kits.
