If Peoria is one of your regularly traveled routes, you may want to opt for a detour this week as crews will be working near 41st and Peoria.

The strip of Peoria Road is in the middle of a facelift. With all the traffic here the work is needed, but businesses are feeling the effects.

Rush hour traffic in Brookside can be a lot to handle, and this week, Peoria between 38th and 41st, is going to be even worse.

Crews just started a street maintenance project and have completely shut down the east side of Peoria in the middle of one of Tulsa's shopping and dining hot spots.

David McMahon's business sits right in the middle of it.

“It would've been nice if they could've contacted the business owners so they know what is going on, rather than finding out on the way to work,” he said.

McMahon just opened his vapor shop a year ago and said this week-long shut down could equal a lot of lost business. He said a construction truck completely blocked the entrance to his parking lot Monday.

“We could've prepared customers so they could get their supplies and get ready so they don't get caught in the traffic jam,” he said.

Until Saturday there will only be one lane for north and southbound traffic.

The project is laying new asphalt to hold the area over until 2019 when Improve Our Tulsa begins, and the whole street will be rehabbed curb to curb.

“In the long run when it all gets wrapped up it will be worth the while,” said McMahon. “I grew up around Brookside. It is a great place to shop and there are great people.

The project is being paid for from savings on other street projects around the city.
