Tulsa Police Identify Man Who Barricaded Himself In House After Shooting

Police said dozens of officers and the Special Operations Team worked together to end a standoff in north Tulsa. Police said it started after one man shot his brother.

Police used tear gas and enlisted the help of family members to get the barricaded man safely out of the house and into handcuffs. He's been identified as Donell Girod, 44.

It took six hours, dozens of TPD officers and the Special Operations Team to end a standoff at the home on North Quincy.

Police responded after a man showed up at an area hospital with a gunshot wound to the shoulder. He told officers his 44-year-old brother shot him with their mother in the house.

Officers got her out of the home safely but say Girod flashed a gun, barricaded himself inside and hours later he crawled out of the front door and was taken into custody.

Tulsa Police Officer Leland Ashley said that moment didn't come easy.

"I think the challenging thing, just the mere fact that, just trying to get the individual to cooperate with us. We had a number of officers, part of the SWAT team out here for the most part on an overtime basis called out that was challenging and early on the rain,” he said.

The standoff ended just before 1 p.m. Friday, but several tactics were used to make sure it ended peacefully.

"Him speaking with family members, him not, us try to contact him by home ultimately delivering the OC spray gas inside the residence it was just a combination of all of that,” Ashley said.

The gas left a mess in the home, which Leonard Cooper owns, and was renting to the men's mother.

“They said it is pretty bad. One of the guys in the SWAT team came through, and they said it's kind of a total wreck,” Cooper said.

A wreck he wasn't prepared to pay for.

“I gotta get a loan to fix the house. You want to loan me something - $3,000 or $4,000,” said Cooper.

Police said the man accused of pulling the trigger and wrecking the home will likely face attempted murder charges for shooting his brother. 

Girod was booked Friday night on a count of assault with a deadly weapon. His bond has not been set.
