Junior midfielder Lauren King scored the game-winner off a pass from junior-transfer Madison Smith at the 53:59 mark. This was Kings third career goal as she has netted one goal in each of her first two seasons.
“We didn't have a preseason game and neither did Abilene Christian, but we knew what to expect,” Head Coach Kyle Cussen said. “We had a great atmosphere tonight, and to get a shutout is always a good way to start the season. It was good to get one under our belt and play someone other than ourselves, but now we have to refocus as we head on the road and play at Arkansas State on Sunday.”
Kajal Parmar and Rachel Thun both had a team-best four shots, while King added three attempts and Alexa Sidorakis had two shots. Marleigh Essler played all 90 minutes in goal, earned two saves and picked up her first career shutout.
TU had a 15-3 lead in shots, including a 9-2 advantage in shots on goal. Both teams attempted three corner kicks.
The Golden Hurricane will return to action on Sunday, August 24th against Arkansas State. Game time is set for 2 p.m. in Jonesboro, Ark.
