Late Meltdown Costs Shock In Opener

The Shock held a fourth quarter lead, but were unable to keep pace in the game's closing minutes.

A late letdown cost the Tulsa Shock a win in its season opener Saturday, falling to the San Antonio Silver Stars 88-79 in disappointing fashion.

Tulsa managed to score the first five points of the fourth quarter, thanks to a three-point play from Temeka Johnson, but gave up six unanswered, allowing San Antonio to tie the game 68-67 with 6:34 left to play.

The two squads traded baskets for the next five minutes, heading into the final 90 seconds of the game tied 79-79, but the Shock was unable to keep pace in the closing minutes of the game. San Antonio scored nine unanswered points to close out the game, and send Tulsa to a tough loss in the opener.

Johnson finished the game as its leading scorer, turning in 21 points and nine rebounds in the loss, while Ivory Latta added 14 points and four assists and Glory Johnson finished with 11 points and 10 rebounds.

Sophia Young set the pace for the Silver Stars, turning in a double-double with 20 points and 13 rebounds, with Becky Hammon adding 17 points and nine assists.
