Treasury Department Crackdown On Deadbeat Parents Causes Concern

Getting behind on child support could cost some Oklahoma parents their entire income starting next year.

The move is a federal effort to crack down on men or women who don't pay.  Parents who fail to pay and receive government benefits could end up with nothing.

Right now, if you get federal benefits, Oklahoma can garnish 65 percent of your check for back child support. But starting in the spring of 2013, Oklahoma will be able to take all of it.

Next year the US Treasury Department is switching to electronic payments only, so states will be able to freeze benefit payments for a person who owes back child support.

Several news outlets are reporting that many of the parents affected have children who are long grown up and the money won't even go to them.

Analysts say the collected money will go to the state, to repay that state for providing welfare for the child.
