'Dead Man Walking' Author In Tulsa For Free Lecture

A nun whose work on death row was translated into print and film will speak at the University of Tulsa Tuesday.

Sister Helen Prejean will discuss capital punishment at 6 p.m. on February 21, 2012 at the Lorton Performance Center. The event is in support of Tulsa Opera's production of "Dead Man Walking," opening February 25.

The lecture is free and open to the public.

Prejean, a Catholic nun from Louisiana, was spiritual adviser to death row inmate Patrick Sonnier and witnessed his execution. She published a book about her experiences which was adapted into an Oscar-winning film featuring Susan Sarandon.

"The TU College of Law is pleased to partner with Tulsa Opera in presenting a lecture by Sister Helen Prejean, who will speak about the death penalty," said Janet Levit, Dean and Dean John Rogers Endowed Chair.

"This event is a perfect fit for TU Law, as one of our professors, Lyn Entzeroth, is one of the nation's leading scholars on the death penalty. Sister Helen's presentation is also a great example of how diverse entities from art and higher education can join to enrich the community."

Prejean's books will be on sale at the lecture.
