Despite big performances from Taleya Mayberry and Taylor Hooker, the Golden Hurricane had trouble scoring and fell to the conference-leading UTEP Miners 64-54, slipping to 5-7 on the season.
Mayberry finished with 18 points, four rebounds, three assists, but turned the ball over five times, while Hooker contributed 13 points, five assists and four assists, but were the only two TU players to score more than six points.
Outside of their 12-of-26 shooting performance, the rest of the team hit just nine of their 30 attempts in the loss.
Despite their scoring woes, the Golden Hurricane erased a 17-point first half lead, cutting the deficit to just one point at the 12:47 mark thanks to a three-pointer by Chanice Scott, her only field goal of the evening.
However, the Miners responded immediately with seven unanswered points to take a 51-43 advantage with eight minutes to play. The lead would dip below one possession just one more time in the game, but the Golden Hurricane couldn't get over the top.
Gloria Brown led the charge for the Miners, recording a double-double coming off of the bench, scoring 14 points and grabbing 12 boards, while Kelli Willingham added 12 points and dished out four assists in the win.
The Golden Hurricane will be back in action at 1 p.m. Sunday at home against East Carolina.
