Tulsa built a big first half lead and cruised to a 67-53 win over the Houston Cougars Sunday to move to 5-5 in conference play, with just six games left in the regular season.
The Golden Hurricane (10-11, 5-5) scored the first 16 points of the game, bookended by three-pointers from Chanice Scott, who scored eight – to put the Cougars in a big hole early. Houston (2-19, 1-8) responded with a 12-4 run, but the Golden Hurricane scored the last four points of the first half to head into the locker room with a 24-12 lead.
The lead held for the majority of the first half, with Tulsa leading 44-32 with 10 minutes left to play. The Golden Hurricane scored five unanswered to take a 49-32 advantage, and put the game out of reach.
Taylor Hooker led all scorers in the contest with 26 points and seven boards, with Taleya Mayberry adding 12 rebounds and four assists in the win.
Roxana Burton set the pace for Houston with 15 points and four steals, but turned the ball over five times. Amanda Lawson chipped in 12 points, eight of which coming from the charity stripe, as well as seven boards in the loss.
Tulsa will be out of action for a full week, before traveling to Houston to take on the Rice Owls at 2 p.m. Sunday.
