The Sequoyah County Sheriff's Office arrested a 26-year-old Vian man last week after dozens of people saw him dragging a horse down a paved county road.

Deputies say Reuben Houston told them he was upset at the horse because it kept getting out of a pasture, so he dragged the horse behind his ATV.

Houston was arrested on complaints of cruelty to animals, unauthorized motor vehicle use on a roadway, destruction of property and trespassing.

Deputies say the injuries to the horse were so severe that a veterinarian had to euthanize it.

They included a damaged eye and large areas of flesh ripped open on the shoulder, ribs and near the hip and flank.

Houston was released from jail on a $9,500 bond.

The Sequoyah County District Attorney's Office is awaiting paperwork from the Sheriff's Office before it decides on formal charges.
