OKLAHOMA CITY -- The Erick Lady Bearcats came back in the closing minutes of the fourth quarter to top Deer Creek-Lamont 50-49 Thursday to advance to the semifinal round of the Class B playoffs.
Trailing 37-33 to start the closing eight minutes, Erick’s lone senior Alicia Brinkley connected on her second three-pointer of the game to close the deficit to one point.
Deer Creek-Lamont responded with a 7-2 run, including a three-ball from Baleigh Hutchison, to stretch their advantage to 44-39.
However, Erick’s offense continued to battle back. The Lady Bearcats scored six unanswered points to retake the lead 45-44 in the contest’s closing minutes.
DCLA senior Samantha Golay hit a three to retake the lead, but Miranda Janz – who scored eight of Erick’s fourth quarter points – hit a three ball of her own to move ahead.
Brinkley hit a pair of free throws on a one-and-one to seal the deal for Erick. She finished with a game-high 22 points, while Janz added 20 -12 coming from behind the arc.
The Lady Eagles' Katy Starr also managed 22 points, dominating the paint for Deer Creek-Lamont.
Early on Deer Creek-Lamont relied on Starr’s advantage in the post to take an early lead. The 5-foot-11 used her height advantage to score down low, accounting for seven of the Lady Eagles’ first nine points to take a 9-3 lead.
Brinkley was the Lady Bearcats’ offense in the opening quarter of the quarterfinal matchup. The guard attacked the heart of the DCLA defense, and scored all of Erik’s first quarter points. She closed the opening eight minutes by hitting back-to-back shots to tie the game 10-10.
She continued to pace the Lady Bearcats in the second quarter, hitting her first three-pointer of the game to cap off a 7-2 run to take a 17-12 advantage early in the second.
Deer Creek-Lamont scored the final four points of the second quarter to close the deficit to 17-16 at halftime.
The Lady Bearcats will now take on the winner of Hammon and Pittsburg at noon Friday in the Big House.
