KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The Oklahoma women got off to a fast start, but could not keep its momentum going in an 81-68 loss to Texas A&M Friday in the Big 12 Championship.
The Sooners started the scoring and led for the majority of the first 10 minutes of the game. Texas A&M took the lead and then went on a 9-0 run to extend its advantage to 10 points – the largest of the game at that point – and led 36-29 at halftime.
Oklahoma cut the deficit to one possession several times early in the second half, but the Aggies responded every time. They went on an 11-0 run midway through the second half to gain some more breathing room, and the game was not close again after that.
Texas A&M dominated the boards all day and finished with a total of 41 rebounds, including 18 on the offensive end. The Aggies also had 13 steals – compared to only four for OU – and scored 17 points off turnovers in the first half alone.
Sydney Carter led A&M with 19 points, and Tyra White scored 18. Danielle Adams had the game’s only double-double with 16 points and 11 rebounds, seven of which came on the offensive glass.
Whitney Hand led all scorers with 21 points for OU, but finished 3-of-10 from behind the 3-point line. Danielle Robinson scored 19, and Nicole Griffin scored 12 points on perfect 6-of-6 shooting.
The loss eliminated Oklahoma from the Big 12 Championship, and the Aggies now will move on to the conference finals where they will face No. 3 Baylor. The Bears crushed Kansas State 86-53 in the other semifinal game.
