NORMAN, Oklahoma – The University of Oklahoma’s Media Day Friday will include registration of OU’s athletic staff and football team who are willing to become marrow donors.
The Oklahoma Blood Institute will be on hand to conduct registrations, and the players and staff are registering at the recommendation of head coach Bob Stoops. Fans will also have the opportunity to register as marrow donors at the annual Meet the Sooners Day.
More than 10,000 Americans require marrow transplants to cure life-threatening diseases, and only 30 percent of those find a family member who is a matched donor. The donor process generally takes between 10 and 15 minutes and will be free at Friday’s events.
Anyone can register starting at 7 a.m. at Meet the Sooners Day at the Rugby Field in Norman if they are committed to being donors and:
- Are between 18 and 60 years old and in generally good health
- Have a driver’s license or social security number
- Complete registration forms with contact information on themselves and two family members
- Answer health questions
- Sign an agreement to join the registry
- Swab the mouth cheek for tissue typing and matching
