Time Is Running Out For Seven Tulsa Community Centers

TULSA, OK -- Time is running out for seven community centers scheduled to close at the end of February.

On Saturday, hundreds of kids played their last basketball game of the season and parents are speaking out about their frustration with the city.

Parents at Franklin Park say the city is turning their back on hundreds of kids who rely on community centers to stay off drugs, out of trouble and to have something to do.

At Franklin Park, more than 100 kids play in Saturday leagues. They practice several times during the week. 

But like six other community centers, Franklin Park's basketball and football programs will soon shut down.

"If you take away this park, for some of these kids, what's going to happen," asked Arthur Presley, a father.

Parents say it's not just learning how to shoot a lay-up, it's about learning life skills.

"These community centers give kids something to do after school, on the weekends. It keeps them off the street," said Ramon Smith, a father.

Last week, Councilor Jack Henderson pushed hard for a penny sales tax increase -- a fight he says he's not giving up.

"I think I can find four councilors that's willing, whether they like it or not, send it to the vote of the people," said Jack Henderson, Tulsa City Council.

Referee Richard Calhoun says the kids mature with every dribble and every shot.

"It gives them something to do, it's an outlet. It keeps them out of trouble, teaches them team sports. I mean, it teaches them how to be a better kid," said Richard Calhoun, a referee.

Calhoun's job is also on the line, but he says there's always more games to ref. He says his biggest concern is that the city's not fighting to protect the kids.

The penny sales tax increase is back on the City Council agenda in two weeks, right about the same time the seven community centers will shut their doors. 

In the meantime, the centers are looking for help from private donations.
