DELAWARE COUNTY – A 63-year-old man was hit by a car and killed Sunday while trying to help victims of a car crash, according to the Oklahoma Highway Patrol.
The incident happened shortly after noon on Sunday on state Highway 20, about 10 miles east and four miles north of Jay in Delaware County.
Troopers have identified the man as 63-year-old Peter Holland of Jay. Holland died at the scene from massive injuries.
Holland was standing off the roadway helping victims involved in a previous collision. A vehicle traveling southbound on the highway failed to negotiate the curve, ran off the right side of the roadway and struck Holland, according to the collision report. The car then struck a fence.
The driver of the vehicle, 54-year-old Timothy Eyres of Grove, was not injured.
It was raining at the time of the collision and troopers reported the road was wet.
Troopers determined the cause was because of “unsafe speed for road conditions.”
