CHICKASHA, OK -- A Grady County jail inmate who was mistakenly released has been taken back into custody.

Jail officials say a clerical error led to the release of Terry Bumpus on Thursday after he posted $50,000 bond.

Bumpus was being held on rape and maiming charges, and Assistant District Attorney Lesley March says he was supposed to remain in jail even if he posted bond because his probation had been revoked from a previous conviction.

Bumpus' attorney contacted March on Friday to arrange for him to surrender.

Bumpus was arrested for the rape and branding of a 15-year-old girl last October. March says the girl and her family left town after she notified them that Bumpus had been accidentally released.
