OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) -- Formerly conjoined twin girls remain in critical condition four days after successful separation surgery.
Preslee Faith Wells and Kylee Hope Wells had been joined at the chest since their birth on October 25. They were separated on Monday at the Children's Hospital at the University of Oklahoma Medical Center.
A pediatric surgeon, Dr. David Tuggle, said Thursday it may take one or two months for the twins' bodies to adjust to being apart. Tuggle says that once separated, their bodies were not quite big enough for all of their organs.
Doctors say the twins will require more surgery within a year.
Their 20-year-old mother, Stevie Stewart of Calumet, says the babies are sedated and she has not been able to hold them yet. But she says she is eager to bring them home.
