Republican candidate Daniel Ayers Gilbert was born in 1946 in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. He was an Eagle Scout and a member of the Baptist Church.
He grew up on a farm in rural North Carolina and worked his way through Virginia Tech with a Bachelor's Degree in civil engineering. He was in the Army ROTC and served in Vietnam.
He married his first wife, Judy, in 1968. She died in 1976. He married in second wife, Linda, in 1982. He has two children and six grandchildren.
Gilbert worked for the City of Winston-Salem from 1972 to 1986 in inspections, property management and telecommunications. He started his own business in 1986, developing a line of emergency communication equipment. He has also owned Pintech USA, Inc., a manufacturer of electronic musical drums and percussion instruments.
Gilbert's political platform:
He believes in strong border control to secure the border; a continuation of the Iraq War until the Iraqi' are "ready to protect themselves from both internal and external threats;" and a reduction in U.S. foreign aid to include preference for countries who support the U.S. in the War on Terrorism.
