Guinea pigs are not pigs, nor are they from Guinea, but they have been a popular household pet for centuries. There's a workshop this weekend so interested people can learn more about Guinea pigs. The News On 6's Rick Wells reports Guinea pigs don't do tricks, but they do like rodeo and NASCAR on TV.
Thompson's General Store in Owasso is a place to learn more about Guinea Pigs or by their more proper name, Cavies. There are 13 different varieties of Guinea pigs this is a Peruvian, one of the long hairs.
Susi Easton and James Murray are with the Green Country Cavy Club. They are having a workshop at Thompson's this weekend to increase awareness of Guinea pigs.
"Guinea pigs can live in your house. They don't take up a lot of space. They talk to you. They have great personalities, better than some animals. They are really kind of low maintenance," said James Murray.
The workshop, Guinea Pigs 101, is Saturday at 11 a.m. at Thompson's General Store at 10010 North Garnett Road in Owasso. It will be an opportunity to learn more about raising and showing Guinea pigs. There may even be some you can take home.
