WASHINGTON (AP) -- Democratic Party Chairman Howard Dean is criticizing President Bush and congressional Republicans for not supporting a bill that would expand a popular children's health care program.
In the Democrats' weekly radio address, Dean says GOP leaders are willing to borrow to fund the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan but won't increase spending for the State Children's Health Insurance Program.
Earlier this month President Bush Bush vetoed legislation to add $35 billion over five years to the program. This week, the House passed a new version which the president has again promised to veto. And again, Democratic support fell short of the two-thirds majority needed for an override.
Dean says the country can't afford "a president who borrows for the war and denies health insurance" to children.
