THREE MILE BAY, N.Y. (AP) _ A car being chased by police crashed into a utility pole, killing three young children and critically injuring their mother, who was at the wheel, authorities said.

The car broke in half, with the rear part continuing 50 feet past the shattered pole, Jefferson County sheriff's Sgt. Joseph Cullen said Saturday.

The children _ one in a car seat, one in a booster seat and one wearing a seat belt _ were trapped in the wreckage, part of which caught fire, he said.

It was not immediately clear from police which half of the car the children were in.

Lisa Parker had been stopped for erratic driving near the village of Chaumont late Friday but drove off as a deputy was about to question her, Cullen said Saturday.

The deputy followed and tried to stop her again, but Parker continued speeding away until her car smashed into the pole, he said.

Cullen said investigators were still working to determine how fast she was driving and why she bolted during the traffic stop. There is no confirmation alcohol was involved, but ``that's something we're looking at,'' he said.

Parker, 29, of Weedsport, was listed in critical condition Saturday at Upstate Medical Center in Syracuse with multiple internal injuries.

The dead children were identified as Mary Porvo, 2; Nathaniel Parker, 6; and Tyler Parker, 10.

Three Mile Bay is 72 miles north of Syracuse on Lake Ontario.
