(McAlester-AP) -- US Senator John Edwards of North Carolina brought his campaign for the Democratic presidential nomination to southeastern Oklahoma Tuesday morning.

Edwards spoke at a fund-raising breakfast in McAlester, saying he opposes closing military bases and supports tax breaks for companies that keep jobs in America.

Edwards also says he wants to bring health care costs under control, make sure there are quality teachers in every classroom and make college affordable for all who want to attend.

Edwards is believed to be the first presidential candidate from a major party to appear in McAlester since President Harry Truman in 1948.
