(New York-AP) -- An Oklahoma native who once played bass with Duke Ellington and other musical greats has died.

Aaron Bell died Monday in New York at age 82.

Bell was Ellington's bassist from 1960 to 1962 and later worked with Ellington as an arranger. He also recorded music with Sammy Davis junior, Billie Holiday, Buck Clayton and others.

Bell grew up in Muskogee and served in Navy band in Indiana during World War 2.
