The 24 people who received awards Thursday from the Carnegie Hero Fund Commission:

_William J. Martinson, 55, of Gladstone, Mich., saved Mildred M. Castor, 64, from burning in a car accident on Oct. 18, 2000.

_Patrick J. Pryal, 44, of Rapid River, Mich., saved Peter M. Sundholm, 54, from burning in a car accident on Oct. 18, 2000.

_Jon M. Caswell, 30, of Highlands, N.C., helped save Sundholm.

_David J. Buchmeier, 34, of Cheyenne, Wyo., rescued 1-year-old Destiny C. Martinez from a natural gas explosion and fire in her home on April 23, 2000.

_Michael Fesen, 43, of Springfield, Va., helped save Janet A. Ferrara, 61, from burning when the motor home she was traveling in caught fire.

_Shannon Marie Segura, 25, of Green Bay, Wis., saved her neighbors' baby, Ashley R. Stone, from burning in her crib on March 19, 2001. Segura suffered smoke inhalation, a burn and a cut knee.

_Gerard Bowles, 67, of Brandon, Miss., attempted to save Gerald S. Thomas from being stuck by a vehicle as Thomas lay in the roadway after being ejected from his vehicle on Jan. 16, 2000. Bowles was struck himself as he went to get a flashlight from his car and had to have both lower legs amputated. Thomas was pronounced dead at the scene.

_Donald Lamontagne, 47, of St.-Pierre-Baptiste, Quebec, rescued Clermont Cote, 46, from a 2,200 pound bull that attacked Cote on his farm on Oct. 10, 1999. Cote was hospitalized for four days with broken ribs.

_Terry V. Allshouse, 53, Akron, Ohio, died trying to save Matthew A. Stoffer, 26, from suffocation after Stoffer lost consciousness in the oxygen-deficient atmosphere of the sewer vault he was working in on Sept. 1, 2000. Both died of asphyxiation.

_Jeffrey Rivera, 35, of Trinity, Fla., rescued Daureen M. Parker, 48, from burning after her van crashed into a gasoline pump, which caught fire, on December 8, 2000.

_Richard C. Guillot, 33, of St. Petersburg, Fla., helped rescue Parker.

_Thomas J. Dorr, 56, of Gambrills, Md., rescued Robert E. Miller from burning when fire broke out at Miller's home on Jan. 7, 2001. Miller, 85, could not walk unaided.

_Webster D. Sanders, 17, of Tampa, Fla., attempted to save Jordan Joanides, 35, from drowning after Joanides' vehicle dropped from bridge into Tampa Bay. Sanders jumped 22 feet into the 15-feet-deep water and swam 150 feet to where the current carried Joanides. The current carried both men farther out and a police diver arrived to assist. Joanides died of injuries sustained in the accident.

_Ronald Fischer, Jr., 15, of Flint, Mich., attempted to rescue his mother, Jackie L. Fischer-Kelly, from assault by a man who had entered their home on July 21, 2000. The assailant stabbed Ronald once in the chest during the struggle, then fled and was caught by police. His mother died of her injuries.

_John B. Frederick, 49, of Springfield, Ohio, saved Sally A. Harris, 48, from burning when her building caught fire on Oct. 13, 2000.

_Brian Evsich, 26, of Swannanoa, N.C., rescued Kathy E. Andrews, 32, after a man struck them as they were walking in a parking lot on Nov. 10, 1999. Andrews was carried 50 feet on the vehicle, then thrown to the pavement when the driver stopped. The driver exited and began stabbing Andrews. Evsich suffered a broken kneecap, but ran to Andrews and fought the attacker.

_Edward A. Bowlin, 43, of Black Mountain, N.C., helped in Andrews' rescue.

_Dustin S. Chapman, 17, of Dallas, Oregon, saved William D. Latvala from drowning on March 30, 1999. Latvala, 47, was thrown into a swift creek after being struck by a car. Chapman and another man revived Latvala with cardiopulmonary resuscitation.

_Donald E. Sapp, 41, of Hamilton, Ohio, rescued Bethany R. Durbin, 22, from assault in a parking lot on Jan. 6, 2001.

_Richard Baker, 52, of Hamilton, Ohio, assisted in Durbin's rescue.

_Richard C. Maindelle, 57, of Jonesboro, Ga., died while attempting to save Bhavani V. Mani, 42, from drowning when her car entered a golf course pond on Feb. 14, 2001. Mani drowned.

_W. Kevin Snyder, 33, of Peachtree City, Ga., saved three children from burning in the back seat of a car that had caught fire in an accident on Feb. 22, 2001. While others rescued the front seat occupants, Snyder removed 7-year-old Ashton and 2-year-old Jayln Pouncil and 4-year-old Kimyni Dennis.

_Michel Lemay, 53, of Bellefeuille, Quebec, rescued Sonia Duval, 27, and her daughters, Stephanie, 4, and Sebastien, 2, from burning in their home on Oct. 19, 1999. A third child died in the fire.

_John Kennedy, 44, of Scituate, Mass., rescued an unidentified man from assault in Boston on Nov. 10, 1999.
