NEW YORK (AP) _ Stocks moved higher in early trading Friday after a report that the economy grew in the second quarter at a slightly faster rate than previously estimated.

The Dow Jones industrials were up 77 points at the 8,759 level, adding to a 114-point gain Thursday.

Broader indexes also rose. The Nasdaq composite index was up 16 points at the 1,476 level, while the Standard & Poor's 500 index advanced 9 points to the 1,028 level.

The Commerce Department reported Friday that the U.S. economy grew at a rate of 0.3 percent in the April-June quarter, higher than the 0.2 percent previously reported, but still close to recessionary levels.
