(Oklahoma City-AP) -- The fall leaves in Oklahoma are among the most vivid in recent memory.

The cool, moist weather is helping keep the bright, vibrant leaves on trees across the state.

U-S Forest Service spokeswoman C-J Norvell says thousands are traveling to the Ouachita National Forest in southeastern Oklahoma where she says the colors are the brightest in years.

Shorter days and longer nights mean less sunshine, causing the leaves to change from green to red or gold.

Norvell says rain and a gradual cooling has kept leaves bright and on trees longer than in recent years when dry weather and cold temperatures caused them to fall off quickly.
