Oklahoma ranchers are rounding up extra hay to send to drought stricken South Dakota.
South Dakota has received less than one inch of rain since January. Now there isn't enough hay to feed herds. A drive to send hay from Oklahoma to starving horses in South Dakota is in the works.
Organizers say the horses need 500 tons of hay to make it through the winter. Skiatook resident, Roger Sinclair, "this herd of mustangs goes back to the 1640's. Their bloodline goes that far back. It would be a shame to see those horses die of starvation."
200 bales of Oklahoma hay have been donated so far. But they need more hay and more drivers to haul it to South Dakota.
Anyone interested can drop off hay at a location in Skiatook at 126th and North Harvard.
The effort to get hay to send to South Dakota goes on for another month.
