SPRINGDALE, Ark. (AP) — Tyson Foods has announced a voluntary recall of 2.3 million pounds of cooked chicken tenderloins and breast strips.

The recalled items may contain folded or large overlapped pieces that were not fully cooked as the label states, the company said Monday. Its own inspectors identified the problem, and no illnesses were reported, Tyson said.

Undercooked chicken can cause salmonella, a bacterial infection that usually affects the intestines and occasionally enters the bloodstream. Symptoms include diarrhea, cramping, fever, nausea, vomiting and headache.

The products were sold both domestically and internationally to food service establishments, retail grocers and military commissaries, but not to warehouse or membership clubs. The Springdale-based company said only a small amount of the recalled product was undercooked.

The products were sold under the Tyson brand and other brands. All the products were produced at Tyson's Chick'n Quick plant in Rogers, Ark., identified by the number P7221 on the packaging. Products under the recall came off the line before Feb. 17. Coded date stamps on a recalled product would begin with the numbers 047 or lower.
