NEW YORK (AP) — A high school student was in critical condition after an accident left him hanging from a noose in an art classroom.

Quentin Martin, 17, was apparently fooling around before class on Tuesday at The Door alternative high school, police said. He climbed up on a pipe or baseboard, put a noose being used in an art lesson over his head, and then lost his balance, they said.

Martin dangled a few inches off the ground while other students ran for help. A few minutes passed before he could be freed and taken to a hospital.

It did not appear that Martin was trying to kill himself, said Pamela McDonnell, a Board of Education spokeswoman. ``It appears to have been a prank gone awry.''

Martin was on a respirator and in critical condition at St. Vincent's Hospital, officials said.
