(Kansas City, Missouri-AP) -- Oklahoma native Jay McShann is being honored by the American Jazz Museum in Kansas City, Missouri.
The jazz pianist is a Muskogee native who moved to Kansas City in 1937.
The museum has dedicated a new outdoor performance pavilion to McShann.
McShann's contributions to jazz include forming a big band in the late 1930s that included saxophonist Charlie Parker. The band's 1941 sessions in Dallas were Parker's first recorded performances.
McShann has toured extensively, playing jazz festivals in Europe, Australia and New Zealand.
