BOSTON (AP) — Red Sox batboy Carlos Cowart has resigned his part-time job with the team as an investigation continues into the discovery of illegal steroids found in the car he borrowed from a player.

Cowart, 20, was arrested June 30th in Boston's Dorchester section on charges including driving without a license. Cowart, who has worked for the Red Sox for four years, had borrowed Boston infielder Manny Alexander's car while Alexander and the team were in Chicago to play the White Sox, according to police.

Police said they found illegal steroids in the glove compartment of the car.

Alexander had no comment on the matter Tuesday night at Fenway Park, where the Red Sox lost to the White Sox 4-2. Alexander is hitting .205 with one home run in 56 games this season.

State police are investigating the matter.

``I don't know a lot about it,'' Red Sox manager Jimy Williams said. ``We'll handle it the best way we can, through the authorities. That's all we can do.''

Chicago Cubs slugger Sammy Sosa, a former teammate of Alexander, said he tried to telephone Alexander, but hasn't heard back from him.

``I feel sorry for him because he is in a tough situation right now,'' Sosa told Chicago reporters. ``It's going to be tough. Hopefully, that doesn't hurt him. But I don't think he had anything to do with it.''

Cowart was arraigned in Dorchester District Court July 3 on charges of driving without a license and failing to stop. He was released on personal recognizance. A trial date has not been set.
