NEW YORK (AP) — Woody Harford was a little late getting home to his 2-year-old daughter Tuesday. He was busy golfing — and winning a million dollars.
Harford, a decidedly amateur golfer with a 19 handicap, won the money when he sunk a 100-foot putt at a Central Park gala to launch a new golf magazine.
``I hit an 80-foot putt this weekend so I figured ... why not try it?'' said Harford, 36, moments after he checked in with his daughter's baby sitter. ``I told her I was going to be a little later than I thought.''
Five people missed the putt before Harford won the competition, sponsored by Maximum Golf. Celebrity competitors included Donald Trump, television personality Maury Povich and former New York Ranger Rod Gilbert.
Harford, a vice president for marketing at British Airways, said he planned to take his family and friends golfing with his winnings.
