(Columbia, South Carolina-AP) -- South Carolina Governor Jim Hodges' signature could end months of debate over the Confederate flag.
The governor says he'll sign a compromise plan to take the controversial flag down from the Statehouse dome and move it to a monument on the grounds.
The flag is to come down July first. Hodges promises a proper ceremony to mark the removal of the flag from the House and Senate chambers, where it also hangs.
Today's agreement comes after months of debate, marches and demonstrations that have attracted thousands to Columbia.
Supporters say it's an important part of the state's heritage.
Opponents say it represents slavery and racism.
