EUFAULA, Okla. (AP) -- A passerby rescued a boy but apparently could not save a 52-year-old man when a homemade boat capsized on Lake Eufaula. The drowning occurred about 10:15 a.m. Sunday, the Oklahoma Lake Patrol said.

James Melton Westfall of Whitefield drowned when his 14-foot flat-bottom boat with a motor took on water and capsized near the southeast boat ramp, the patrol said.

Eric Westfall, 7, was transferred to Muskogee Regional Hospital in serious condition. A passerby on the shore saw the two and recovered them in about 15 feet of water 100 yards from shore, the patrol said. Life vests were available but not in use, the patrol said.
