NORMAN, Okla. (AP) _ A University of Oklahoma fraternity, already suspended by the university, has been suspended by its national board of directors following an apparent alcohol-related incident involving a new member.
Dave Maguire, executive director of the Delta Upsilon International Fraternity, said the board decided to suspend the OU chapter while it investigates the events which sent an 18-year-old student to the hospital.
The suspensions come after a student, who pledged to Delta Upsilon fraternity this fall, was treated at the emergency room early Thursday after being taken by ambulance from his dormitory. His name has not been released.
The incident occurred less than a month after Blake Hammontree, 19, of Medford was found dead at the Sigma Chi fraternity house after a Big Brother-Little Brother event.
Maguire, who was on campus Sunday to initiate the fraternity's new pledge class, said the OU chapter was in ``unquestionably good standing'' before the incident.
``They are one of the best chapters in the country,'' Maguire said.
