OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) -- Oklahoma City police are trying to determine if human bones found last month are that of a college student who disappeared in 2001. Mayuko Kawase of Japan was reported missing in August 2001 by her family in Japan. Police have asked the family to provide DNA samples which could be compared to the bones.
Detectives say testing could take up to two months.
The 21-year-old Kawase was last seen at her home in south Oklahoma City and the remains were found in a wooded area in southeast Oklahoma City.
A human skull was found by members of a church youth group as they hiked in the area and police later found more bones.
Investigator Kevin Rowland with the state medical examiner's office says a forensic anthropologist has determined the remains are of an Asian or Hispanic woman between 18- and 25-years-old.
