FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (AP) _ Arkansas Chancellor John A- White and athletic director Frank Broyles are issuing statements supporting Houston Nutt as football coach.

White's remarks come less than a week after Broyles announced he'll retire at the end of the year.

Broyles recommended and White agreed to extend Nutt's contract through 2012.

Criticism of Nutt heated up after offensive coordinator Gus Malzahn resigned to become assistant head coach and co-offensive coordinator at Tulsa. Days later freshman quarterback Mitch Mustain and freshman receiver Damian Williams asked for and were given releases from their scholarships.

Nutt has called two radio talk shows recently to defend his leadership of the football program amid criticism from fans and sportswriters.

Broyles says Nutt's accomplishments can't be overshadowed and that he's the ``right man to lead the Razorback football program.''

Arkansas was 10-and-4 last season but lost their last three games.
