TAMARAC, Fla. (AP) _ A man was charged Monday with shooting two sheriff's deputies, killing one, during a traffic stop in suburban Fort Lauderdale.

Eloyn D. Ingraham, 28, of Sunrise, was being held without bond on charges of first-degree murder and attempted murder of a law enforcement officer, according to the Broward County sheriff department's Web site. It was not immediately clear if Ingraham had an attorney.

Ingraham was a passenger in a car pulled over at a condominium late Saturday after Deputy Brian Tephford suspected the vehicle was stolen because it had the wrong tag, Sheriff Ken Jenne said.

Tephford called for backup minutes after making the stop and Deputy Corey Carbocci was dispatched to the scene. Shortly after, both deputies were fired upon but neither had a chance to fire his weapon, Jenne said.

``It would appear that they were taken totally by surprise by this shooting,'' he said.

Tephford, 34, who was not wearing a protective vest, was shot twice, Jenne said. The six-year veteran of the department was pronounced dead at a hospital.

Carbocci, 37, who was wearing a protective vest, was shot four times, authorities said. He was listed in stable condition at Broward General Medical Center, hospital officials said, and was expected to make a full recovery.

Ingraham was captured at a Dania Beach motel Sunday afternoon, authorities said, without releasing details.

Authorities believe Ingraham was the sole gunman, though it is possible he fired more than one weapon, Jenne said. Two other men seen on surveillance video with Ingraham, running past security cameras at a Sunrise strip mall, were being questioned. Their names have not been released.

Authorities determined the car Tephford pulled over was not stolen, Jenne said. The woman driving it was not taken into custody.
