AUSTIN, Texas (AP) Colt McCoy threw 3 touchdowns passes to break the Texas single season record and the #4 Longhorns stayed in control of the Big 12 South with a 36-10 win over Oklahoma State on Saturday night.

McCoy also had a career high 346 yards on 23-29 passing for Texas (9-1, 6-0), which had to rally to win its previous 4 games but seized control early in this one.

McCoy's 27 touchdown passes broke the school mark of 26 shared by Vince Young (2005) and Chris Simms (2002). The redshirt freshman is two shy of the NCAA freshman season record of 29, set by Nevada's David Neill in 1998.

Coming in, the game looked like it would be a shootout between two of the Big 12's hotshot young quarterbacks.

But while McCoy had a career night, Bobby Reid had a miserable time against the 112th rated pass defense for Oklahoma State (5-4, 2-3).

Reid, the 3rd rated passer in the country, was 11-28 for 123 yards and 2 interceptions and consistently misfired high and short of open receivers. Twice in the 4th quarter he threw balls high into the Royal-Memorial Stadium crowd.

The Cowboys, who had built big leads with fast starts against Texas the last two years before losing, managed only 203 total yards and didn't score an offensive touchdown, getting their only points on a field goal and 2nd half kickoff return.

McCoy was methodical, picking apart the Cowboys with short and long passes against constant blitz pressure to Texas drives moving.

His first TD pass gave Texas a 10-0 lead when Nate Jones slipped behind Perrish Cox, who appeared to lose sight of the ball, for a 13 yard score. The Cowboys fumbled the ensuing kickoff and McCoy hit Quan Cosby for a 28 yard TD on the first play to make it 17-0.

Oklahoma State drove to the Texas 7 before Reid missed a wide open D'Juan Woods at the goal line. Reid grabbed his helmet in disgust and the Cowboys settled for a field goal that deflated any momentum.

McCoy was 14 of 17 in the 1st half for 193 yards as Texas built a 20-3 lead.

After Ryan Bailey kicked his third field goal from 19 yards for Texas, Oklahoma State's Grant Jones, who fumbled the kickoff in the 2nd quarter, returned this one 89 yards for a touchdown that cut the lead to 13.

But the Cowboys blew their chance to get back in the game. They forced the Longhorns to punt, but were penalized for a personal foul that gave McCoy another chance.

McCoy finished the drive with a 27 yard TD pass to Jermichael Finley for a 30-10 lead that put the game away.
