LAWTON, Okla. (AP) -- Regents decide to create an emergency medicine department and residency program at the University of Oklahoma College of Medicine in Tulsa.

Six people will be accepted into the three-year residency program each year, with the first class expected to begin residency training in emergency medicine in July 2008.

Meeting in Lawton, regents also approved the creation of the Oklahoma Institute for Disaster and Emergency Medicine at OU-Tulsa. The institute will work to improve systems for trauma care, disaster response and emergency medical services.
