OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) -- A musician and Oklahoma native who made his mark in country music has lost a bout with cancer.
Larry Joe Cossey died Wednesday at the age of 56.
Cossey was an accomplished musician who spent the past five years as the bass guitarist for country music artist Mel McDaniel.
Oklahoma City-born and Tribbey-raised, Cossey taught himself to play guitar, which his daughter, Jacy Cable, says started his lifelong love of country music.
Cossey played in several bands in Oklahoma before moving in 1992 to Nashville, where he performed at the Grand Ole Opry.
He won Billboard Magazine's country songwriting contest in 1995 and TNN's song writing contest in 1998.
Cossey is survived by Cable, his wife, Malinda; his father and a sister.
