A Sapulpa High School senior is headed for the Big Apple to receive a national award for her art.
News on 6 reporter Rick Wells went to Sapulpa to talk to Lindsay Williams about the award and how it may have re-shaped her future.
Lindsay Williams is a senior at Sapulpa High School and she's a terrific artist, in fact Roger Johnson the Visual Arts Chairman at Sapulpa High says she's one of the best he's ever taught. "She's exceptionally good."
Others think so too, because she's headed for New York City and Carnegie Hall next week to accept a national award. The American Visions Award. "It could be compared to Best of Show or Judges Choice." She was one of five nominees for the award from a regional contest at the University of Tulsa.
Her portfolio will be with her in New York City, but she showed us one of her favorites. “This is oil and pastel, this is the style I really like to do, alot of texture a lot of lines." But she scratched it bringing it in, I thought that was a disaster, she wasn't worried. "This is not a big deal." It's the last week of school lots of people finishing up projects, so she just sat down and fixed it.
She'll graduate with honors Friday night, which is one of the ironic aspects to this story. Art was never a priority with her, just something she had a talent for. "I really only started taking my art seriously this year." But the national award has refocused her attention; she's heading for TU in the fall as an Art Major.
Roger Johnson: "I'm very proud of her." Lindsay and her family are headed to New York City next week.
