A tragic accident at the Tulsa raceway kills two members of a local racing family.

Two-time regional champion Shelly Howard and her son were killed in what's being called a "freak accident." Tulsa Police responded to the Tulsa Raceway Park at 3101 North Garnett Road just after ten o'clock Saturday night.

Racing website, "Inside Top Alcohol" reports, Shelly Howard was killed when her brand-new dragster caught air, going more than 200 miles an hour. Howard's car reportedly spun 180 degrees, accelerated back toward the starting line and crashed into the team's tow car, which was carrying Howard's son, Brian. He later died from his injuries.

A note posted on Shelly Howard's official website Sunday states. "Shelly will always be remembered as a champion." She's been racing since 1978. Howard helped to create the Top Alcohol Racers Association.

Sunday, the web site's message board says Shelly and Brian's Memorial services will be held Wednesday at 10 AM at Ninde Woodland Chapel in Tulsa.

Shelly Howard leaves behind a husband and two daughters.
