MUSKOGEE, Okla. (AP) -- The price for illegally parking in a handicapped spot is going up ten-fold in Muskogee.

The City Council has voted to raise the fine from $25 to $250.

Police Sergeant Pete Liimatta says the increase is long overdue. He says the state has set a minimum fine of $150 and a maximum of $250 for illegally parking in handicapped zones.

The new city ordinance says the fine will be the maximum allowed by state law.

The city is now considering allowing a citizen's group called Extra Eyes Patrol to help in writing parking tickets.
