1 lb. ground beef 1 c. chopped onion 1 c. chopped green pepper 1 (12 oz.) can tomato paste ½ c. quick or old-fashioned oats, uncooked ½ c. water 1 (2 ½ oz.) jar sliced mushrooms, drained 1 tsp. salt 1 tsp. oregano leaves, crushed 1 tsp. basil leaves, crushed ¼ tsp. garlic powder 12 oz. Mozzarella cheese, shredded 1 (1 lb.) loaf French or Italian bread
Directions:
Preheat oven to 400 degrees.
In a skillet, brown ground beef with chopped onion and green pepper. Drain and rinse, if desired, to reduce the fat content. Return meat mixture to skillet, and stir in tomato paste, oats, water, mushrooms, and seasonings. Stir to blend well; simmer, uncovered, for about 10 minutes.
Meanwhile, slice bread loaf lengthwise with a serrated knife. Hollow out bread, leaving a ½ -inch shell on bottoms and sides of both halves. Place half of the shredded cheese on the bottom loaf. Spoon the warm meat mixture on top of the cheese. Top with remaining cheese, then cover with the top half of the bread loaf. Wrap tightly in foil, then place on a large baking sheet. Bake for 15 to 18 minutes, or until bread is crispy on the outside.
Slice and serve with a crisp green salad, then enjoy with family and friends! This makes a lot of servings, and would be a great dish to serve at your Super Bowl Party!
