OKCPS Officials Working On Coronavirus (COVID-19) Closure Plan

OKCPS officials are working on a plan to feed students and pay employees during the COVID-19 closings.

In an emergency meeting Tuesday, the Oklahoma City Public Schools' Board of Education and Superintendent Sean McDaniel set a 48-hour deadline to unveil the plan.

The school board voted to grant McDaniel decision making power as COVID-19 updates keep coming in.

According to McDaniel, the priority is coming up with a nutrition plan, providing breakfast and lunch for students during the closure.

Two meals per day will be provided at different sites throughout the metro area starting Monday.

“Our kids, many of them, if they don’t receive the school lunch, the school breakfast, they just don’t eat,” McDaniel said.

The board also discussed the possibility of having part-time employees staff the planned nutrition centers around the city.

That lead the board to their second task, discussing different options for paying hundreds of part-time district employees.

“We want to do everything within our power to make sure that paychecks are not impacted,” McDaniel said.

The full plan for handling nutrition and staff payments will have full details, according to McDaniel.

“This impacts everybody and so our planning and our communication is critical,” McDaniel said.
