Brian Smallwood is a producer here at News on 6, but he is now a published children's author. His first book, Little Man, hits shelves today.
Smallwood joined Ashley Izbicki in the studio to discuss his new book. Smallwood said "Little Man is a book full of affirmations encouraging young black boys to love their dark skin, to love their hair texture, and all the things that make them who they are. All those things are beautiful regardless of what anyone says." He was inspired to write this book when his search to find inspiring and diverse books for his niece fell short.
Smallwood believes his mission and his purpose with this book specifically is to write words that celebrate black culture and give black children a chance to see themselves represented across all platforms. He said "it is written with black children in mind, but I feel that any child can learn from this book and learn that the importance of diversity starts at home."
