Grill Masters are preparing for the first annual "Step Up to the Grill on Greenwood Cook-Off" Saturday morning.
It's a free event featuring feasting, friendship, and a little healthy competition. Participants will go head-to-head and these champion hopefuls have been out at B.S. Roberts Park prepping since 5 a.m. The event features 21 grillers competing in one of three categories; Ribs, Chicken, and Brisket.
The organizer of the cook-off says each challenge will be judged based on taste, tenderness, and appearance. First-place winners in each category will walk away with a trophy and $3,000. There will be free taste testing, a Jumpin' Jupiter, and live music for anyone who wants to bring a lawn chair, a tent, and a big appetite. Jesse Foster is the organizer of the event, who says it's all about bringing a diverse community closer together.
"I wanted to put it here on Greenwood because, you know, this is our history and I wanted us to come together as a community and just celebrate each other and celebrate labor day weekend together as a family, and you know, it's just really all about love," says Foster.
Foster says he is accepting donations at the event for Kiondre Martin's Transplant Fund a family friend who needs an intestinal transplant. The cook-off takes place from 10 a.m. to 6.
